Leather Care

At The London Tanners we are passionate about Leather, and so in the twenty years we have been around we have learned a thing or two about caring for leather implements.  It is always great to see a London Tanner implement that was bought years ago, still going strong.

Leather is virtually indestructible if treated right.

To ensure yours last a long and happy lifetime, and you can join those who now can call their implements ‘Vintage London Tanners’ follow these simple steps:

  1. Storage is key – Leather hates to be too dry or wet.  Never store a leather implement where it can’t ‘breath’ – avoid plastic bags/containers. Keep leather in a cool, dry place. If it gets wet, dry it out slowly – not over direct heat or with a hair dryer, as this will cause the leather to crack.  Just leave it to dry out naturally in a room.
  2. Clean and condition the leather.  We recommend you clean your implements every six months.  Use a leather balm such a Fiebings leather conditioner, Lexol or comparable beeswax, or a lanolin leather conditioner.  A good dubbin , as used on football boots, also works well to soften and protect our products. Work the conditioner in to the leather using your fingers, allowing 24 hours for it to soak in, and then use a dry cloth to wipe off the excess. For cleaning leather after a play session, simple baby wipes are fine and will not harm the leather.  A soft cloth and warm soapy water to wipe over the surfaces will also be fine.
  3. A few no-nos: Leather is skin, so a good rule of thumb is if you wouldn’t put it on your skin, don’t put it on the leather.  Never use bleach, alcohol, household cleaners, turpentine or mineral spirits and waxes or silicone (which prevent the leather from breathing).  Keep out of sunlight and direct heat sources, and protect from humidity.
  4. Of course, the best way to keep your London Tanner Leather Implement supple, is giving it plenty of use!
